West Coast Swing Dance Practice held on Saturday afternoons in Marin County, San Francisco Bay Area, CA. BYOP (bringing your own partner or practice buddy) helps to keep ratio of leaders to followers even. Music played will be a selection of soul, contemporary, hip hop, R&B, blues, and tempo geared to West Coast Swing dancers working on technique, lines, footwork and so on. Do I need to bring a partner?
No, but it is recommended. We try to keep our numbers of leaders to followers even, so each person brining a dance partner helps that happen, but it is not required.
Can I play my own music?
Yes, bring your iPod and one half hour of your favorite music and John or Sam will be happy to plug it in. Do not handle the stereo equipment on your own. Please ask John or Sam to make any adjustments to iPod, song selection or volume. Provided the group does not object strongly to your taste in music, LOL, you will be able to practice to some of your favorite songs. Also, feel free to email us a list of titles and artists and we will add your favorite music to our play list.
How does the coaching work?
As often as we can afford, whatever money we have collected over and above space rental, etc., is used for hiring a west coast swing dance instructor to coach the group. To date, our coaches have been the instructors listed on this page. In order to support our local dance instructors as well as traveling instructors, we encourage our participants to also book a half hour or more private lesson whenever possible. Depending on how many attendees and how flexible the coach's time, the coach makes their way around to each dance partnership for a "mini-private" with each dancer. This is an excellent way to "sample" an instructor's teaching style as well as get some very valuable and efficient feedback. Each couple should respectfully be aware that other dancers want coaching feedback as well, be efficient, don't monopolize the coach's time, and let the coach move onto coach the next partnership. Coaches are generally available the entire session if you'd like to book more time, even in smaller increments. Contact coaches directly to book private lessons.
